The proposal will
provide an integrated, highly themed, landmark leisure and entertainment
facility, commencing at the foreshore; including the north station, the
trains, the Pier and the Pier Head. These proposals fully satisfy
the ambitious objective of Southend-on-Sea Borough Council to make the Pier a
world class leisure attraction.
The intention is for a major themed visitor experience,
commencing at the new Pier entrance pavilion and extending to major
facilities on the Pier Head, to provide activities for all ages. The development will include:-
- A new pavilion style building on
the site of the former bowling alley
-
Re-development of the foreshore promenade deck
-
New pier trains and upgrade of the existing track, progressing to an
additional track allowing four trains to run
-
New train stations at the shore end and Pier Head
-
New Pier Head building incorporating cafe's, bars and restaurants, 4D
cinema/theatre, and conference/function suite.
-
Extreme sports at the Pier Head, including
bungee
jumps, Scad Jump, Sky Scraper, Ejection Seat, extreme Helter Skelter
and Rip Ride.
- Expansion of existing events and
entertainment programme, taking advantage of the new spaces and
cinema/theatre in the new Pier Head building
- Retail units at both ends of the
Pier
- Improved Pier access
- Retention and improvement of
facilities for berthing of commercial passenger vessels and private
boats; angling and walking with enhanced seating
- A logical extension of the
development at the end of the High Street and foreshore linking the
town centre with the Pier
- An integrated lighting scheme
throughout the Pier as part of the overall theming.
