The
world famous Pier should be the
iconic symbol of Southend
"Southend is the Pier, the Pier is Southend"
Sir John Betjeman
The Pier has always been a
leisure facility and until the 1960’s attracted large numbers of
visitors. Even before the fire in October 2005, with limited entertainment and
facilities, it still attracted approximately 380,000 visits annually.

The Pier is
synonymous with Southend the world
over.
Southend
is well suited to the development of a
leisure attraction. It
has a large catchment population of 13 million people within 90 minutes drive
time, and an additional 2.5 million
tourists in Essex.
Southend
can again become a primary leisure destination, with the
development
linking the past and the 21st century, creating a major tourist attraction for all ages. The Pier will be a catalyst for the area, continuing the
original
purpose for which it was built.
This project meets the needs and challenges outlined by Thames Gateway -
"Delivering The Future."
